Tomorrowland and Couleur Café introduce Belgium’s most sustainable battery, ES Flow, for their festivals

3.7 min read

Tomorrowland and Couleur Café have chosen Belgium’s ES Flow battery to power their campsites.

This decision reflects the festivals’ commitment to reducing their environmental impact with the most sustainable battery ever designed.

The ES Flow battery is the most environmentally friendly battery made to date, offering a reliable and eco-friendly power source for home users as well as large-scale events such as Tomorrowland and Couleur Café. By using this innovative technology, these festivals are setting a new standard for green energy in the entertainment industry.

EcoSourcen, a Belgian company specializing in energy transition, is proud to announce that Tomorrowland and Couleur Café, two iconic Belgian festivals, will use the ES Flow battery to power their campsites. With this choice, the festivals aim to reduce their carbon footprint by using the most sustainable battery ever.

Why is stationary energy storage strategic to our energy future?

With increasing electricity consumption, mainly due to the rise of electric cars and heat pumps, combined with the goal of decarbonizing our economy, energy storage is becoming extremely crucial for society as a whole.

Renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power are becoming increasingly efficient but produce electricity only when the sun shines and the wind blows. Energy storage, both at the residential and industrial level, allows the management of the periodicity of renewable energy production, significantly increases self-consumption and reduces the pressure on the electricity grids, which are becoming increasingly saturated.

Energy storage is no longer based solely on mobility-enabling technologies

Until now, energy storage has been mainly focused on mobile applications such as smartphones, electric vehicles and electric bicycles, where energy density and light weight were of paramount importance. Today, with the rise of renewable energy, the need for stationary energy storage solutions, where weight is no longer an important factor, becomes crucial.

The most durable battery ever designed

EcoSourcen sets a new standard with ES Flow, a vanadium redox flow (VRFB) battery that outperforms traditional alternatives:

Durable: an exceptional lifespan of 25 years, much longer than current storage technologies (10 to 12 years}.
Safe: the battery is non-flammable, completely eliminating the risk of fire and explosion, unlike Iithiurn batteries.
Stable: ES Flow can handle multiple charge and discharge cycles without loss of capacity and
is therefore ideal for stationary use.
Competitive storage costs: ES Flow offers the lowest cost of electricity storage on the market (Levelized Cost of Storage, LCoS}, thanks in particular to a high end-of-life residual value.
Recyclable: the vanadium electrolyte that makes up more than 60% of the battery is 100% recyclable or reusable at the end of its life, reinforcing its sustainability.

European production

ES Flow batteries are proudly developed in Belgium and manufactured in Europe, at the production center in the eastern Czech Republic. “Geopolitically, it is extremely important for Europe not to be completely dependent on China and the US for energy storage. This is one of the reasons why we decided to develop our production center in the Czech Republic,” said CEO Dany Bosteels.

Customized solutions for every need

ES Flow offers customized solutions for every energy need. For households with high consumption, coupled with heat pumps or electric vehicles, the 8 kW and 40 kWh batteries are ideal. For industrial applications and networks requiring larger capacities, ES Flow offers modules of 250 kW and 1 MWh, which can be infinitely combined to meet all requirements.

EcoSourcen supports festivals and other businesses in their energy transition.

“We are proud to confirm that both Tomorrowland and Couleur Café will be using our ES Flow batteries to power their festival campsites. The sustainable nature of our batteries and the vision of both festivals to reduce their impact on the environment played a crucial role in their choice,” said Thomas Barvais, COO. “The example of these festivals clearly reflects our ambition to support organizations in their energy transition to reduce their carbon footprint while significantly lowering their energy costs.”
