De Driehoekshoeve in Kasterlee is an active farm combined with a spacious holiday farmhouse. The Van de Perre family runs a modern veal calf operation with over 1,400 animals and, through De Driehoekshoeve, offers a rural accommodation for groups and holidaymakers, allowing guests to experience farm life and the countryside.
Problem statement
De Driehoekshoeve is generating an increasing amount of solar power, but without storage, it cannot use it efficiently. A large portion is lost or fed back into the grid at low cost. Additionally, the farm was looking for a safe, sustainable, and long-lasting way to store green energy without the risks or limitations of lithium batteries. The challenge: how to maximize retention of their own green energy and safely store it for years of use?
Solution by EcoSourcen
De Driehoekshoeve is taking a significant step toward full sustainability. By expanding the solar installation by 25 kWp and generating an even larger share of its own green electricity, the majority of the farm’s energy consumption can now be covered directly on-site. To make optimal use of this solar energy, 80 kWh of energy storage has been provided via a vanadium redox flow battery. The choice of this technology is deliberate: unlike lithium systems, a flow battery offers an exceptionally long lifespan, is non-flammable, and is built with materials that can be produced and recycled in Europe. In this way, the farm chooses not only efficient energy storage but also a robust, safe, and future-oriented solution.
